| On the face of it, this Netflix thriller looks like fairly standard stuff, the kind of Hitchcock-inspired thing that litters Channel 5's afternoon schedules on a regular basis, so I was very, very pleasantly surprised when I finished watching it. It's got a dash of "Rear Window" and a soupcon of "Vertigo" in this tale of an agoraphobic woman who spies on her neighbours and gets more than she bargained for, and it's superbly filmed, with stunningly composed shots and sumptuous colours. There's also the excellent acting, with Amy Adams as the titular Woman, coming apart at the seams (her climactic breakdown scene is heart-wrenching), Julianne Moore as an enigmatic neighbour and Gary Oldman as...well, Gary Oldman (but in a good way). It's nicely taut and gripping and lovingly put together. Quite beautiful, in fact, and well worth a look. |
