| Washington Heights, a large Latino community, mostly from the Dominican Republic. Usnavy runs a small Bodega and dreams of reviving his father's beach bar back home. Nina is at Stamford but feels that she 'doesn't fit in'. Vanessa works at the hair salon and longs to move down town and become a fashion designer. There's a lot to like about this musical and I'm sure many will love it but I have some niggles. It's the old sentimental canard of a working-class community where everybody knows everybody and they've got each other's backs. People who try to leave come back with their tails between their legs to take their 'rightful place'. When there's a black out, they all sing a song called 'We Are Powerless'. Not exactly subtle! When the Communal grandma dies she leaves Usnavy a lottery ticket worth almost $100,000 and he uses it to get a teenage boy his documents and make him legal rather than to realise his own ambitions. Is anyone that self-sacrificing? The music is samey but then it's not my sort of music. There are some lovely touches: when some juicy gossip is passed on in the hair salon, the polystyrene heads wearing wigs on the wall all swivel in shock. It's too long at almost 2.5 hours but the dance routines are fun, some of them reminiscent of Bollywood at its most extravagant. |
