Hi Peter and welcome to Acton and the forum. Colin, I have never heard you be so vile, which is saying something. You've fought my attempts to clean up our end of Acton, many-a-time, so I'm not so convinced you care about bottles and cans lying in our streets. End of. Let's not pretend Acton is anything but, well, Acton. It has some great people in it, but that's enough about me and mine. No, seriously, it does have some great people living here and it's on the up. Think back 5 years ago....many of us fought long and hard to get the street cleaning and graffiti situation improved, and we did. It's slipping again now, probably due to changing Council government, cut-backs and a change of contractor. If you care about litter, then you need to keep on top of it. Peter, I would suggest becoming a Streetwatcher. I would also suggest that many people are used to walking past litter (and cans of alcohol) that we don't really see it anymore. I go out once a week in our street and litter pick. I would suggest you do the same. I know, Ealing Council are supposed to do that and if they don't do it properly then I urge you to report it. Check they've done it and done it properly. I think it makes it harder to drop litter if it's a clean street....broken windows theory and all that. Landlords. Can't abide the irresponsible ones. If I had my way, well, won't go into that. I take note of which estate agent is letting a property so that, if the new tenants fly-tip or cause a nuisance, I know who to complain to in the first instance. If you're a Streetwatcher, you're given Council notices about refuse collection times, etc, so you can drop those through the offending door. I seriously don't think one can "love Acton, rubbish and all". No-one who cares about their environment loves rubbish. The reason we have so much, or we have a few who dump so much, is it's a transient and multi-cultural place to live. Some people love that. We also have a Gospel Choir at St Mary's Church on The Mount, which I used to sing in but stopped due to work commitments. It's now grown and is fabulous to listen to and great fun to be in, if you're interested. We also have a few other churches in the area (St Dunstan's is frequented by many families in the area) and they're very friendly and sociable. Good luck Peter and I really hope we all get to see a cleaner, more welcoming Acton very soon. |
