Road painted roundels alone do not constitute legal signage, except when ordered by the Secretary of State - something that is only done in places of outstanding natural beauty e.g. New Forest. So covering up the repeater signs has indeed had the effect of raising the limit to the national speed limit. I guess converting the road from lit to unlit when the lamp posts started rusting through at the bottom and falling over (no drainage holes - clever design) has removed another factor that could have made this a 30 MPH road with repeaters covered. They should also install a red warning sign "NEW 30MPH SPEED LIMIT IN FORCE" to highlight the fact that a lower speed limit is in force, although this is advisory rather than a strict legal requirement. Finally, there are different requirements for the lines separating lanes (both length and line/space ratio) when the speed limit drops below 40mph - but I doubt they'll bother burning off and repainting the entire length. I did see someone on Tuesday evening who had been pulled over by a police car. I do hope they haven't been given an unenforceable speeding ticket. |
