| Looking like a Italian neo-realist films from the 1940s/1950s, including being shot in black and white, this film moves quickly in its depiction of the lives of a poor Italian family struggling to live in Rome after the end of WW2. Delia (played by an excellent Paola Cortellesi) is the bullied and long-suffering wife of a brutal and controlling husband Ivano, as is made very clear from the opening scenes. She lives in a crowded basement flat looking after her three children and a bed ridden father-in-law, while doing a host of other small side jobs daily to try and make ends meet. For a film that depicts so much domestic abuse, it does an amazing job of being very amusing. This is due to its sharp script and performances catching the honesty and sarcasm of the neighbours and Delia’s best friend who confide in each other, alongside the social mores of Italian society of this period. The oldest daughter struggling to get an engagement into a more prosperous bourgeois family to escape her oppressive family and the father’s devotion to everything his selfish father says, only adds to the pathos of the situation. Early on Delia receives a mystery letter which leads to an ending which is unexpected given all that has preceded and felt a bit of an anti-climax, to this non-Italian viewer. An offbeat movie that despite its depiction of domestic violence I must admit I found a very enjoyable watch. |
