One company that for me has come out of this saga with credit is HoldFast Level Crossings, who make the rubber blocks for the road surface (from 100% recycled rubber, mainly from vehicle tyres). I emailed their MD, Mark Coates-Smith, back in July to alert him to the problem, not because I thought it was his product at fault but in order to get someone else involved with an interest in sorting it out. I emailed him late on a Friday evening and got a reply at Saturday midday after he had already actioned his people to investigate. It quickly became apparent that it was Network Rail's problem (HoldFast are just their supplier), and would take some weeks to sort out. But Mark continued to take an interest, and mailed me at the end of August, after the originally planned weekend work, to ask whether the crossing was now OK (which it wasn't, as the work had been postponed). Since then I have kept him in touch with recent developments. It's a small but innovative family business, founded about 22 years ago by Mark's father. It wasn't their problem to sort out, and I'm not their customer, but that didn't stop them continuing to liaise with me and Network Rail until it was sorted. A good attitude! |
