Sarah I was talking to the police, before the Shooting in Manchester was announced. The reason being that I have got my eye on a 10 metre target pistol, and I wanted to know if it came under the fire arms licencing act. As the enquiries went on, it would appear that the police have concerns about the PCP (pre charged) weapons that do not need a licence. There are very strict laws regarding air weapon, and the same law applies to all weapons. The law states that if a person has served a prison sentence of three months to three years, they are not allowed to own a weapon for five years. Any sentence over three years, it is a life ban. The misuse of a firearm albeit an air weapon or full metal jacket, carries a maximum term of imprisonment for life, but for a first offence through negligence for instance can involve a very heavy fine. Example, shooting within your own boundary, but, a ricochet flying off onto somebody else's property, causing harm. It is also an offence to fire a weapon within 50 feet of a public highway. The laws have been tightened up in that nobody under the age of eighteen can purchase an air weapon, and it forbidden by law to buy one via mail order. All transactions have to be carried out face to face with proof of identity and proof of age and address. All weapons should be secured and ammunition stored separately. Be responsible, be safe. It is forbidden by law to shoot animals, unless they are vermin (rats, then only with a clean kill.) It is also forbidden to shoot birds unless they are magpies, carrion crows, jackdaws and all pigeons. It is definitely forbidden to shoot windscreen washer pests, but they are vermin. |
