| We seem to be in New England. Agnes is 28 and lectures part time in English at the local college where she herself was educated. We first see her being visited by former room-mate Liddy, now happily settled in New York with her wife and expecting a baby. Agnes seems cold and withdrawn and, as the action goes back 3 years, we learn that she was sexually assaulted by her thesis supervisor and seems unable to move past it. This first feature has been getting great reviews and I have no quarrel with the director's abilities or with the fine performances, but I was disappointed. I think the problem is that I didn't like Agnes. Even before her trauma she comes across as cold and unable to engage with others, apart from Liddy. There is no mention of parents or siblings or anyone she might care for. She doesn't report the assault to the police and takes a bath which, obviously, destroys any forensics. She does go to see a gynaecologist to check that she hasn't caught anything nasty but is then vilely rude to him. I did feel that I would cross the road to avoid her. No idea what the title refers to, frankly. I'm sure many viewers will disagree. Out now but at Act One from September 5th. |
