New York, early 1970s and Lennon and Yoko have sold their big country estate near Ascot (Tittenhust Park) and moved to a two-room apartment in Greenwich Village. The ability to watch 24-hour US TV versus the UK (remember this was the early 70s) leads to a documentary where the level of US TV clips used (adverts, news (especially the Vietnam War), TV shows) almost exceeds the story of the two lead characters being told as they build their life in the USA. The full reasons for moving to the US are not made clear, though getting custody of Ono’s daughter Kyoto from her first marriage seems part of the reasoning. Lennon’s skirting interactions with the likes of Jerry Rubin, David Peel and John Sinclair with their farcical radical politics of that era in confronting Nixon and the War, soon leads to Lennon being threatened with deportation and withdrawing from involvement in their protests. The paranoia the above situation creates leads to them tape recording all their phone calls which are used extensively across the film (often to comedic effect). The bedrock of the film is a one off Madison Gardens full concert (the only one Lennon apparently ever did after the Beatles break up) to raise money for a disabled children’s school. The concert performance is scattered liberally across the film and without that content one suspects this would have been a very boring documentary depicting Lennon and Yoko’s life and views at that time.
