But there is evidence. People rioted in the 80s for the same reason they rioted this week - because they are thugs who've probably had neglected, inappropriate or abused childhoods with no real parental guidance. Difference is, this week, because, as you say, the police made an operational choice to handle it differently, it then escalated across the week and country. The operational choice of softly, softly was made because, due to people such as yourself, they now are too scared to do anything but. Thanks. As for good or better relationships with local communities, that certainly wasn't a good demonstration of it this week, was it. Does 'better relationships with communities' mean the loss of power? Seems so and I cannot see it was worth the hands off approach. So, the question was, do you think the police have power? And, for good measure, what's your evidence? |
