This seems unduly harsh. He is the leader of a political grouping which is divided into factions which have no common ground and a slim majority which means that groups of his MPs can hold him to ransom at any time and most of them are aware they are losing their jobs anyway. Anybody, no matter how forceful their personality, could adequately manage this situation.
Unlike his two predecessors he is diligent, undogmatic and listens to advice. Hard to argue that he is a pathetic loser when this time next year he will be working in California in the sunshine with an eye-wateringly large salary.
As for Starmer, the suggestion that he lacks backbone also seems to be wide of the mark. Within the Labour party the criticisms are all directly opposed to this namely that he is too rigid on issues such as public spending, trans-rights, Gaza and public ownership. |
